# The London Tamil Sangam (இலண்டன் தமிழ்ச் சங்கம்) > The London Tamil Sangam is a registered charity and voluntary community organisation in Manor Park, in the London Borough of Newham. One of the oldest ethnic-minority organisations in Britain, we have been a second home for Tamil families for generations. Founded in 1936. Registered charity no. 1097724, company no. 00657373. Motto: "தமிழனென்று சொல், தலை நிமிர்ந்து நில்" (Say you’re Tamil, and hold your head high!) ## Mission We look after our community the way a family does. We help children and adults learn and love the Tamil language, keep our culture and festivals alive, and stand beside one another with learning, friendship and a helping hand, so every Tamil family can feel at home in Britain and proud of where they come from. ## What we set out to do - Education: Helping children and adults learn and grow, with patience and encouragement. - Language & culture: Passing our language, literature and heritage on to the next generation. - Community support: Standing beside families through difficult times, with care and practical help. - Recreation & wellbeing: Creating friendly spaces to gather, play, celebrate and feel at home. ## What we do - Adult learning: Tamil and English classes and study groups for grown-ups, and training that helps women grow in confidence and feel at home in British life. - Tamil library: The UK’s largest Tamil library: over 5,000 books, plus magazines and newspapers, to borrow and enjoy. - Elders Club: Saturday lunch, talks, exercise and good company for everyone aged 55 and over. - Youth activities: Music, drama, sport and recreation, so young people grow up proud of who they are. - Festivals: Pongal and our other festivals, celebrated together as one big family. - Advice & welfare: Friendly social, welfare and employment advice for our members and anyone who needs it.
